it’s like a painter..

it is like a painter, spreading the various colors, delusion grasps different forms.. but the elements have no distinctions, in the elements there’s no form, and no form in the elements, yet apart from the elements no form can be found - in the mind is no paiting, in the paiting there’s no mind, yet not apart from mind, is any paiting to be found, that mind never stops, manifesting all forms, countless, inconceivably many, unknown to one another and just as a painter, cannot know his own mind, yet paints due to the mind, so is the nature of all things - mind is like an artist, able to paint the worlds, the firve clusters (aggregates) are born thence, there’s nothing it doesn’t make and as the mind, so is the buddha, as the buddha, so living beings: know that buddha and mind, are in essence inexhaustible - if people know the actions of mind, create all the worlds, they will see the buddha, and understand buddha’s true nature - mind doesn’t not stay in the body, no body stays in mind, yet it is able to perform buddha-work, freely.. without precendent - if people want to really know all buddhas of all times, they should contemplate the nature of the cosmos; all is but mental construction.

groovin’ slowly

you tell me what you want girl, you tell me what you need, you know.. you just say the world then i’ll be right there, yes, i’ll be right there at your feet - because you know you rock girl and i love how we roll but i left you all alone, all we got is the phone and its never going to be enough [..] living in this dug-out, a million miles away.. man, i’d wish they’d paint these walls like an institution man, i’m going crazy - because when i’m far from you girl, i lose myself.. you know the train jumps off the tracks and all my pots fall of the shelf

“i’d do anything to be with you, girl” - i said.

its a little girls birthday and yeah, we are apart.. aint gonna make a big deal out of it, whatever its no hard, you tell her papa loves her yea and it won’t be too long ‘til we’re all together and yes, we’re singing those songs - i escape into my tv, i know you understand, MAN, THEY CALL THAT SHIT REALITY, I’D LIKE TO SEE THOSE FOOLS IN AFGHANISTAN - living in this cold damn world hell bent one self-destruction, what i need right now is..

a little bit of love, little bit of love and affection - once again - i’d do anything to be with you little girl - i said.

good time to roll on

So I just turned 30 this past year. I live in Central Jersey and have a degree in Molecular Genetics. I guess I could be heading off to work in a lab coat, but instead I sit here barefoot, sipping my coffee with my ink stained hands.

Rewind my life 20 something years. As a kid, all I ever wanted to do was hang at my grandparent’s beach house so I could get myself in the water. If I wasn’t teaching myself how to surf with my second hand surfboard, I was likely sitting on it, by the shoreline, sketching. Art and the ocean were my first loves and have stayed with my throughout my life. I went on to lifeguard for six years, doing ding repairs for locals and eventually started my own shaping business out of my garage.  I named it OKOTO. I prided myself on working closely with the buyers, shaping and glassing the boards to fit their individual style.

I eventually went off to college in Philly, but continued shaping and painting whenever I wasn’t working. As soon as I graduated I realized I needed to figure out which path to set out on, so I packed my bags, emptied my savings account and started traveling. I lived a few months in a tree house in the Virgin Islands, traveled abroad and came back for a few winters’ stay in Puerto Rico. It was during this time that I decided I’d stick with what I loved most, and finally settled at home to work on my business.

I moved OKOTO into the apparel industry a few years ago, and it’s been growing ever since. For any of the moments I wish I lived somewhere more fitting to my lifestyle, I’m also grateful to be in such a centralized location to the ocean, the mountains, farmland and the cities. I can draw upon the art rich culture of NYC & Philly, and the inspiration of the shores I grew up on. Both of which greatly influence my artwork and business.

This past year has been a huge growing experience for me as an artist. I’ve branched beyond design work and dove back into painting, which is mainly in oils, but occasionally acrylic. My current series of oils is called “The Art in Shaping” all about capturing those moments in time of a shaper – an art form in itself. I’ve also just started showing my block prints, one of my favorite mediums, since it allows me to really work with my hands in the carving and printing process, but also lets me showcase my love of pen and ink. I’ve also been lucky enough to find a great Pawlonia supplier about a year ago and have been shaping Alaias and hand planers for some time now.

we can easily envisage surf as a sport but there’s also different points of view, other ways to deal with surf, as a life expression and style and also, art

Andy Davis lives in a world of colour, curves and creation. In this featured artist profile, we threw a few words Ando’s way to see what flows through the mind. An artistic outlay…

BEGINNING…

I always doodled as a young one and I guess I never stopped. I even knew then that I would be involved with art in some shape or form for the rest of my life. It just felt natural.

STYLE…
My style is very loose, dreamy and whimsical. I try to recreate little make believe worlds and characters that I see in my head.

SURFING…
Being a surfer I have always been inspired by the ocean and all the creatures that dwell in it.

INSPIRATION…
I get the most inspired by my son and wife. They make so happy, I have never felt anything like it. It’s so hard to put into words.

SURF ART…
I think it’s something the media made up so it can be classified, it’s just a label. Anything can be an art, you just need to be passionate about what you’re doing.

LIVE…
New Zealand. It seams like a great place to raise a family. Very simple living & uncrowded. I hope to end up there one day, sooner than later hopefully!

MUSIC…

I don’t think I could function with out music. I have been really into Pandora lately, but right now I am listening to Lou Donaldson.

CREATE…

It starts with loose renderings, then if it feels right I will figure out what medium I’m feeling the most that day, it could be a water color, a tee shirt graphic, a page in a scrapbook or I might decide to do a painting.

VISION…
I have a concept store at the moment called ebb and flow. It’s in Cardiff Cali. My clothing collection ando and friends is doing monthly ads in surfer magazine as well that I create. You can also see more at andoandfriends.com or some of my artwork at mynameisandy.com

FUTURE…

I hope I can still be blessed enough to support my family and get to do what I love most for a job. I am so lucky!
